Thanks for posting these images.

They graphically illustrate how effective the American fire-bombing of Japan was, before they used their ultimate bomb. The images also argue against the American decision to use a nuclear weapon wihich had the attendant terror of radiation sicknesses.

The willingness of the Japanese High Command and the Emperor to allow civilian population suffering from the fire-bombing, also argues that the atomic bomb* was not the deciding factor in the Japanese decision to surrender.

If that can be demonstrated, then what was the deciding factor? The major factor is much more likely to have been the short Soviet-Japanese war of 1945. In both the 1943 Tehran conference and the 1945 (feb) conference, Stalin had agreed to enter the Pacific war, once Germany was defeated. After a massive build-up of an invasion force, Soviet Russia declared war on Japan and invaded occupied Manchuria on May 8. They steam-rolled the weakened Kwantung army with a pincer movement and also invaded Sakhalin Island (to the north of Hokkaido), thus confronting the Japanese administration with the probability that they would be faced with a Russian invasion of their home islands. Their decision then became a choice between surrendering to the Russians or to the Americans, or expressed differently, who would be easier to con?

This short war also resulted in the establishment of Russian sovereignty over all of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands and the establishment of Russian influence in what is now North Korea.

* there are of course, other aspects to the use of a nuclear weapon.
