Quote: A further parallel is the burden of an ageing population, with mounting pension and health-care costs, he says.

Yes the dependent population is growing, but how much of a drag on the economy this will be depends on how pragmatic the Chinese authorities are. Chinese that I know, still see they the younger generation will have to support the elderly in health and finances. They do not expect the government to create a welfare state to take care of all this.  That would be a huge project which the authorities will approach very carefully.

The ageing of a population need not cause any productivity loss if human labour is replaced by machine (automated and computerized) labour. Clever adjustments are required. 1. First to develop the efficient system of automation itself. 2. To organize the maintenance of effective consumer demand by distributing enough of the value of the automated productivity to the population not strictly according to their actual work; but to preserve some value for investment and reasonable profits. 3. To train workers to supervise the machines. 4. To infuse capitalism with socialist social stability mechanisms. I expect China (and indeed the whole world) will resolve the apparent problem. This, of course, requires overcoming traditional views of capitalism and socialism as contending opposites. China, having recently evolved through a fairly-pure socialist system to a mixed socialist-capitalist system, is the one country most prepared to combine both concepts. This makes the Chinese example key to the future.

There are credible Chinese and non-Chinese - as well as reknown British historians - who would scoff at your revisionist 'history.'  Can't expect objective history lessons from a sinophobic eurocentric racist like sennie.
