The Islamist militant group Hamas recently held training camps for young would-be soldiers pledged to do battle with Israel, and allowed news cameras to film some of the carefully staged sights. Here’s a look.

The Washington Post reports that more than 17,000 youths and young men aged 15 to 21 gathered at a dozen training camps in the Gaza Strip over the past week to drill with various weapons and show off their will to fight.

WaPo reports that this year the camps were hosted by Hamas’ military wing, Izzedine al-Qassam; in the past, they were run by the organization’s political wing and held during the summer.

This year’s winter camps had a much more military focus. Qassam commanders were on hand to run the campers through training drills, calisthenics, and other demonstrations.

WaPo quoted a Qassam officer named Abu Mujahed: “The camps are designed to answer the demands of the youth — to do something.”
