The cover of a book about Empress Wu by a white author had a glaring goof.  The 8th century Tang empress was illustrated wearing a Manchu outfit of the 19th century empress dowager.  Such goofs are common in the western media with Qing Dynasty pigtails and manchu outfits in depictions of Chinese men  from 2000 years ago. A lack of diligent research on the part of westerners is not uncommon.
