BEIJING - Construction on a Universal Studios theme park will begin in Beijing's east suburban district of Tongzhou this year, district director Yue Peng said in a work report.

The Beijing Universal Studios was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in September 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2019.

Singapore has Universal Studio. Beijing wants to build. Shanghai will follow. This is good. Chinese no longer need to travel abroad. China government brings excellent amuzement theme parks home. This will create employment and economic development with growth. Each Chinese may only have twice in a life time to enjoy it! Great!

Yes, you can bet that this project was dreamed up by a small minority of unelected people who were more than willing to sacrifice precious land for such mindless "entertainment", especially when it involves a foreign corporation. Shanghai too had their own Disney project which appropriated farmland for foreign cultural artifacts.

When China invests in foreign lands, however, it's largely about building useful infrastructure for those countries. The money poured into the UK and US remind me of John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hitman", when weak countries were forced to give up their earnings to what Emmanuel Wallerstein called the "metropolitan centers" of the West. It is highly probably that China is being enslaved today.
