This is an important and urgent topic, seeing how many Chinese movies, especially those from Hongkong, have been distorted and served only the interest of those who robbed, pillaged, and turned China into the "Sick Man of the East." All too often we see benign Westerners, including missionaries, who "helped" China during the Qing/Republican period, and forget their seizing of our lands and cities, their navies patrolling Chinese coasts and rivers, and even their control of Chinese Customs. No one seemed to question how China's average life expectancy before the Opium War dipped to around 25 years, or how thousands upon thousands of Chinese cultural relics ended up in Western museums. Since the early 1980s, everything Western have been idolized and everything Chinese, including the great achievements of the Communist Party, have been denigrated by compradors and other brainwashed Western proxies in China. This has happened because the Communist Party itself had given up the entire information apparatus to the West and their proxies, resulting in a near-total acceptance of Western hegemony, that is, their social, political and historical narratives.|
The May 4th movement provided a slogan for China's rejuvenation, which was to use Western science to strengthen China but keep to our Chinese essence. This was practiced during New China's first 25 years, when China developed a powerful industrial base that enabled it to produce the atomic and hydrogen bombs, missiles, satellites, and nuclear submarines, etc. At the same time, it also developed Chinese medicine, popularized Chinese acupuncture and Taiqi, and introduced the world's first high-yielding hybrid rice. In other words, New China kept its goal of preserving the good aspects of its culture, while importing also the most advance of the West whenever possible.
Since the 1980s, however, the nation has thrown overboard almost every good aspect of Chinese culture: Chinese medicine was downgraded and despised, and everything Western was worshipped, including their notions of sexuality, their obsession in the backsides of Jennifer Lopez or Kim Kardashian, their language such as "divas" or "goddesses" and, in politics, phrases such as "world leaders" - as if some people or nations are ordained by God to rule the world - and "individualism" without knowing what that term entails. Chinese writers and the entertainment business think about producing for a tiny section of Chinese and Western bourgeois classes but forget that the great majority of the Chinese people are more concerned with their livelihood, their societal problems, etc.
Will post a more detailed response later.
