To Aragon--What CET4/6 actually are.
I hope I can explain it well without causing too much confusion.
CET stands for College English Test, which have two bands: Band four and band six. Band four is the fundemental requirement for a college student to get his/her diploma while band six is NOT compulsory. Basically, they are the tests that give a brief and general overall look at a student's English listening, reading and writing ability. They actually are sort of like common standards for society and indivadual to recognize a college graduate's English using capability. They are more for finding jobs at large. CET 6 therefore, is harder than CET-4.
Talking about CET and TOEFL, they are quite different. TOEFL, or GRE or GMAT are given by ETS, whose root is in USA,full name is Educational Testing Service. ETS gives tests that I mentioned as the requirment for entering college/ graduate school in North America, and sometimes including other regions. TOEFL is used as a ringbell to knock the door of American/Canadian schools, but if you're applying for a Master's degree, you should have GRE or GMAT, depending on what you want to major in. CET only has its recognition in mainland China, its influence is quite limited, but still regarded as one of the most important tests that society, school will ask students to take.
P.S. We also have SET: Spoken English Test, that is one complementary test to CET.
