If we study the history of Annam, the real name of Vietnam, it becomes apparent that Annam without China, cannot exist on its own, just as a foot, without the body, cannot long survive.  The reason Annam survived for so long after its secession from China, was because China did not care to drive away the Vietnamese from its maritime territory surrounding the more than 200 islands in the South China Sea.  Vietnam got away with a free lunch every single day for a very long time, while calling itself separate and independent from China.  But now, when China begins to drive away the Vietnamese fishing boats and pirates from her sovereign waters and islands, Vietnam suddenly feels very insecure and inadequate.

Time for Vietnam to rethink its independence from China.  Is it viable?  Even if China does not invade Vietnam, Vietnam's total economic independence from China is not manageable.  It lacks the South China Sea that belonged for the most part to China for thousands of years.  It is like a prodigal son who wants the first room facing the courtyard, but cannot use the courtyard because it cannot be divided and given to him.  Now, he wants to ally with a neighborhood bully to take over the courtyard for his own use.  Will it ever work?  Of course not.  Before he can take over the courtyard, he would have been booted out of his room by his father, and instead, become homeless.

Vietnam does not see it this way.  It thinks it can somehow persuade China into letting it have the courtyard it wants for itself alone.  The South China Sea islands belongs to all the Chinese people, and cannot be "given" to any of its provinces, let alone a province that separated from China.  Unless Vietnam recognizes China's sovereignty over its islands in the South China Sea, it will not be able to share any of its wealth.  And unless Vietnam votes itself to becoming a part of China, like Annam was, it will not be able to share in all of its wealth.  The choice between rags (false identity as a separate country) and riches (true identity as part of China) normally should not be hard to make, but accustomed as Vietnamese nationalists are to French indoctrination, that they never were a part of China, and that their native language is a caricature of the Western alphabet, it may be impossible for modern day Vietnamese to be who they really are.
