Over the Chinese New Year, I got a call from my father in the UK. My newest bank statement had arrived and he was giving me a report on my account. Though I live in China, I have a small sum of money in the UK in case of emergencies, just enough to pay for flights back to the UK if anything happened. But when my new statement arrived, the account was overdrawn. I was shocked, how could all my money disappear? My father told me that the statement showed many card payments to PayPal, so I asked ...

2013-1-22 14:10
2.4 Implications of Cultural Differences As was identified when undertaking a cross-cultural analysis of Western and Chinese cultures, the Chinese have a high sense of Collectivism, this means that they have a higher dependence on groups or institutions to determine what they should do and that they have a strong loyalty to the groups to which they belong. Collectivist cultures such as China are more likely to cooperate with others to avoid risks and reduce re ...

2.3 Sino-West Cultural Comparison Now that the author has established a comprehensive set of dimensions on which cultures can be compared, this framework will be applied to China, the United Kingdom and the United States. Using data collected by Hall, the author is able to classify China, the United Kingdom and the United States based on the ‘High Context vs. Low Context’ and ‘Monochronic vs. Polychronic’ dimensions. Hall did not classify countries using a numeric va ...

2.2.4 Cross Model Comparison On consideration of the 3 models developed by Hall, Hofstede and Trompenaars Turner, a number of similarities are apparent, Trompenaars Turner’s ‘Achievement vs. Ascription’ factor is similar to Hofstede’s ‘Power Distance’ dimension and Trompenaars Turner’s ‘Individualism vs. Communitairianism’ factor is almost identical to Hofstede’s ‘Individualism vs. Collectivism’ dimension. In addition to the similarities between Trompenaars Turner ...

2.2.3 Trompenaars and Turner Trompenaars and Turner’s cultural framework is more recent then Hofstede’s framework, but its focus is more on the management implications of cultural differences. Trompenaars and Turner’s research was conducted by surveying 15,000 managers of different organisations from 28 countries which lead to a seven dimensional bipolar framework of culture. 2.2.2 E.T. Hall Unlike Hofstede, Edward T. Hall’s work on culture focuses on communication and Hall believes that, in order for individuals to communicate successfully, cultural differences and the different communication processes within a culture need to be considered. As a significant proportion of business requires communication, of one form or another, Hall’s work is very relevant to the topic of this dissertation. The communication ...

2.2.1 G. Hofstede The most widely used cross-cultural framework was developed by Geertz Hofstede, an influential Dutch writer who was born in 1928. Hofstede (2003) believes that “National culture explained more of the differences in employees than did professional role, age, gender or race” (Hofstede, 2003) and through his research, Hofstede has identified 4 elements of national culture wh ...

Opening my own language school... Another Flood!
2 weeks ago, after a period of heavy rain, the school had a small flood in the reception area. Water came though a drainage vent in the floor and came in through a pipe from outside. Though the flood was annoying, and took a long time to clean, it was nothing compared to what happened yesterday, but i will get to that in a short while. After a day or 2 of small floods, we contacted our landlord and the building management to see what could be done. Eventually, after a few days more of small fl ...
