Panama's negotiating mission traveled to China to start the second round of talks in order to establish a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), the Ministry of Commerce and Industries reported.

The meeting will be held in Beijing from August 20 to 24 with the goal of "agreeing on terminology, concepts and definitions that will apply throughout the commercial agreement, as well as the presentation and analysis of their respective tariff line services positions and products with a view to establishing initial positions," according to a statement from the source.

"In this round we hope to clear any doubt in both teams about terminology, definitions and scope of the commercial agreement," explained Panama's chief negotiator, Alberto Alemán Arias, quoted by the Ministry.

On June 12, Panama and China officially launched the FTA negotiations in the city of Peking on the completion of one year of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

China is the third destination of Panamanian exports with more than 42 million dollars in 2017.

The trade balance between the two countries is complemented by taking into account the fact that Panama exports mainly coffee, bovine skins and fishmeal to the Chinese market, while China imports high technology products.

"Even when we start the tariff line negotiation it is possible that we will not reach definitive agreements in this round, the important thing is to present the positions and know those of the counterpart," explained Alemán Arias.

A total of 27 representatives of business and productive associations confirmed their participation in the Fourth Deputy Consultations, he said.

Alemán Arias valued the fact that a large group of businessmen and producers will be present in the Deputy Room of Consultations as very positive. "For us it has been very important to maintain an open and agile communication with the Panamanian private sector, among all we will achieve a good agreement for Panama," he explained.
