A good teacher in my eye

Compared with hundreds of other walks of life, teaching is a both easy and difficult job. On one hand, for a high school teacher, it doesn’t need a Doctor’s qualification to prepare lessons and give lectures; an undergraduate or a well-trained junior college student can be fairly component to the task, considering their not so bad academic knowledge reserve. On the other hand, teaching is not only about demonstrating one’s knowledge; it also concerns one’s skills, methods, experience and attitudes. And teachers’ comprehensive quality counts no less. A teacher’s life seems to be in line with students. It is nine years since I assumed the role of a high school English teacher. Looking back on my both sweet and bitter teaching journey, I wouldn’t conclude with a simple word that my teaching career remains as smooth as a highway in the suburbs. Instead, scenes and details of my teaching life keep flooding in whenever I am seated alone, like a kaleidoscope-like drama being shown onto the stage. Like any other frontline teacher fighting hard in his post, I have been devoted my full time, energy and enthusiasm to my occupation, being helpful to my co-workers and conscientious to my students, without whose cooperation, I believe, I would never have arrived at where I am now. Still, I can’t claim to be an excellent teacher; there is much space for self-improvement and growth. Teaching and learning are complementary to each other in the career development of a teacher. In view of my years of teaching practice, here I’d like to make a summary of what I have gained and share it with those who are in the same camp with me in an effort to help one another accomplish more.

First, it’s of vital importance for a teacher to get his lectures well prepared beforehand. To achieve the goal, elaborate and huge efforts are needed, such as, searching for related information and having a close study of the teaching material offered. With the analysis work done, he should draw up an outline on how to effectively and efficiently organize the teaching procedure and impart the knowledge to students, which are key points and which are difficult points. More preparation may quicken the speed in doing work. It’s required that teachers should contemplate a best strategy to present the new knowledge, step by step, from the easier to the more difficult, from the superficial to the profound. For instance, it’s suggested that teachers start with knowledge connection complete with interesting pictures or video clips to introduce the topic as well as to arouse students’ interest in the following content, which serves as a warming-up practice and the small prelude may help improve their listening and speaking. While having classes, students should be encouraged to use their head to brainstorm the best answers and be open and flexible to solve problems. A good lesson must cover wider, extend further and conclude with achieving a higher level of comprehensive language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Second, it’s required that a teacher should put his heart and soul in every lesson to be presented. He should act as if he were the stage director of a live play where students are the main active participants. His voice should be contagious and overflowing with positive energy while giving lectures. Only in this way can students follow them willingly and intently. In addition, the presentation should be logical and easy to understand. It’s not a bad idea to combine learning with entertainment. An interesting and lively classroom atmosphere can give a good guarantee for the new knowledge to be well received and digested. At the closing of a class, the teacher must evaluate the learning effect and give credits to active students. Sometimes, a few words of encouragement can make real difference.

Third, compared with other intellectuals, teachers are more capable of acquiring new knowledge and developing systematic learning methods. With each class coming and going, teachers should form a good habit of summing up experience and defect from time to time. No lecture is perfect. By analyzing and reflecting, teachers can draw lessons from the practice and make necessary adjustments to better suit the need of students. It’s also advisable for teachers to offer constructive guidance to help students improve learning efficiency. Each student is unique in aptitude. It’s very necessary for teachers to modify his way in guiding each individual. A good teacher can help guide students through confusion and achieve remarkable results in a short time.

Fourth, the issue of improving comprehensive quality could never be too overstressed. A good teacher is one who exercises strict self-discipline and tries to keep up with times. He should dress properly and have good manners in front of students. His words and deeds must be convincing and inspiring so that every single student will be compelled to follow. As well as rich knowledge reserve and language fluency, a nice teacher should also be kind and considerate to students, respect them for who they are and help them improve to be a better person. After all, education, when put into a detailed classroom environment, is to make human beings civilized.

The above is my humble view on how to dictate a successful lecture to students. I hope it will be of much benefit to all. Teaching is an intricate job. Let’s make concerted efforts to explore better teaching methods to optimize our English classes. Thanks!

I enjoyed your thoughts very much. I have been an educator since 1974 and learn something new about teaching everyday. Most enjoyable thing to me as a teacher is when a student who has done poorly, some how with your help a " light" finally burns bright in their mind about learning. When a student sincerely says thank you for all you gave to me, makes my day. Good luck always in your teaching life.

I was diagnosed with HepB 3 months ago and was devastated by the news. I have been ill and sore for over 10 years, with no one being able to figure out what was wrong with me. It was always written off as a virus or infection. Then 2 years ago the severe muscle cramps started. I had them from scalp to toes, and it was when they ran the full spectrum of tests to figure the cramps out, that they discovered the HepB along with severe Vitamin D deficiency, which I link to the HepB. I was so tired and nauseous and in constant pain. I am just sick and tired of feeling sick and tired!!nothing was really working to help my condition.I went off the Sebivo (with the doctor’s knowledge) and started on hepatitis B herbal formula i ordered from Health Herbal Clinic, my symptoms totally declined over a 5 weeks use of the hepatitis B virus natural herbal formula the disease is totally reversed!!
