Is it we who buy your cake or is it you who provides your cake on your birthday? Who invented the idea of a birthday cake? Why celebrate such a day? The Germans are credited with making cakes and putting candles on it. The Germans also put candles on forest trees during the winter solstice festival... and that became the Christmas tree. The famous birthday song we sing started as "Good Morning to You". As to why we make such a big deal about birthdays: marking the event and showing ...

"If I could learn to cook food, I would make roast chicken and roast turkey for Saith every day," said Nirvana. Nirvana mothered the tribe, having jumped past Death one warm February day in Penghu. The entire tribe, including my son, were born on 25 January, or would have been had it been decent then. So January 25th is my children's birthday. I have learned to cook. I make salmon tomato olive stew with fried mushrooms. Inspired by Chinese buns, I wrap foods in puff pastry and bake it i ...

In Canada, we are nostalgic for an era in our past, in the 1700s to early 1800s, before pavement. We had snowball fights in the forests while gathering sap for maple syrup. We fished with a line, not a net. We made small towns. Well, maybe Four Bee, Four Boo and Four Baa, the futuristic cities imagined by prolific author Tanith Lee in Drinking Sapphire Wine can give us the inspiration and the hope we need. In Europe, the name is Rothschild. In America, well, the name people k ...

I am grateful to China for safe shelter after 2003. I am grateful to China for writing clear news people can read. I am grateful to China for guarding the Eurasian steps. I am grateful to China for acknowledging Earth is convex. I am grateful to China for care while seeing who was talking about me. I am grateful to China for caring for my future. I am grateful to China for implementing for the real economy. I am grateful to China for ...

Student: Even though we are facing the serious problem of having accelerated the Holocene extinction, we can't put all our budget into this problem. Me: I agree, although environmental extinction is a direct threat to any national continuity, we certainly do need to continue investing in transportation, education, police, and other parts of the wealth redistribution and infrastructure that governments provide. Also, nations are looking to make a profit by producing something. Stud ...

The chopped tomatoes are cooking with the salmon in the slow cooker with the mushroom slices. When the fish falls apart, the olives are added. The freezer has a tub of spinach cubes, a tub of ginger cubes, and a tub of bacon cubes. I have no ice cubes though as I prefer warm to cold beverages. Bacon cubes? After I fry the bacon and mushroom slices, I store the bacon fat in a jar to use instead of butter, then I make a gravy. The ice cube trays are full of these treats.&nbs ...

Worldwide, species vocalize upon presumption of care. Theft happens, teamwork happens, but the laws aren't based upon accidental pre-judgement such as by rules about chronological age. The lion pride sends their sons away after the son's learn to hunt, rather than on their second birthday just because anyone said so. Are there qualifications for being able to make or say laws? Of course. Wisdom and skill are prerequisites. There is a difference between an accidental pre-judgement and a ...

The CN Tower in Toronto has a glass floor I haven't walked upon. I don't enjoy tourism although it is great for the economy. I prefer living, learning, working and playing responsibly. When I had to de-flea some of my cats, the veterinarian taught me to avoid diazanol, apparently now called diazinon, a nerve gas. My vet taught me to use a flea hormone instead. Mammals do not respond to the flea hormone. The flea hormone affects the entire life-cycle so it doesn't need a second applicati ...

Mathematics is timeless, universal. Avalon's mists are equally beautiful, and portable, so living in Xinbeitou in Taipei, I was still in Avalon, able to walk up the mountain into the forest, able to walk to the lily pond and stand upon the stage in the outdoor theater, able to visit the natural hot spring and watch the rising steam. There is a fig tree as big as a house. There is a beautiful indigenous museum. And there is the city, the shops and veterinarians. If you ever meet someo ...

The DNA news hit the world - we mated with neanderthals! - and some of us were never surprised. It's become a popular issue. "We are black, we are human, and you white people are part neanderthal, we are saying the facts, we are not racist," is a level of truth that needs to be aired to let the white black relation do its laundry. That issue isn't Chinese, and probably the Chinese already know that issue happened because some economists don't know how to do earn and save money and pay bills wi ...

  • Happy birthday to you! (or not :-) ) 2019-7-4 00:07

A couple of friends have a birthday on our national holiday, 1 July, so I started wondering why we celebrate birthdays (it's nice but the history is interesting) and the responsibility for giving is different in different cultures.
