Share W C Special 24: Final Thoughts
2014-7-14 08:08
It is over! Germany won. The title has a double meaning. Yes thoughts on the World Cup Final, but also my final thoughts after 24 W C Specials for the CD Forum. And the winner is Germany. Lisa (not THE Lisa) will be happy with the result! Many of us watched it, so we know the facts. It was a game with two defences on top and occasional patches of end to end stuff and a good bet would have been 0-0 at full-time. Thankfully we got the winning goal in the last 4 minutes of extra time and th ...

Share WC Special 23 : 3rd place debate
2014-7-12 07:51
We will be warmed up for the World Cup final by the battle for 3rd place between Brazil and the Netherlands, live at 4 am on Sunday China timezone (A day later the final is live at 3 am - different time zone in Brazil). But will the decider for 3rd place be worth getting up for? There are arguments for and against having such a playoff. It is not normal in most soccer tournaments to have a playoff for losing semi-finalists. Yet, it is common in the Olympics because of the ...

We eagerly anticipate the final between Argentina and Germany (a repeat of the 1990 final, which Germany won). We hope that it will be better than either Semi-Final. Whereas after 25 minutes of Brazil v Germany, we could have gone to bed knowing that Germany was going to the final, earlier this Thursday morning, we could have gone to bed after 25 minutes setting the alarm to wake up 90 minutes later for the penalty shoot out! Argentina and the Netherlands both played defensively and ha ...

That is the kindest title and after all, the Ks of Germany's Klose, Kroos and Khedira contributed 4 goals. Yet the more embarrassing title should be: Brazil humiliation. Many records were broken during Brazil's 7-1 slaughter by Germany. The first time in any World Cup, that a team had been losing 5-0 inside the first 30 minutes, the highest margin of defeat, 6 goals, in any World Cup Semi-final (although surprisingly, a 5 goal margin had occurred a few times) and Klose became the Wor ...

Or should the title be: Wishful Thinking? No soccer expert worth their salt would claim to have a clear view of who might triumph in the two semi-finals. It is simply too close to call. Nobody steamed into them on top form. So it is more like adding up the pros and cons of each team. Brazil still have the advantage of being the hosts and that large, noisy, passionate crowd - a true twelfth man. Yet they have that pressure on them - the weight of expectation. Pundits tipped Germany t ...

So now we get a couple of days' break to savor the Quarter Finals. It is the first time in the history of the World Cup that the final 8 are all nations that topped their group tables. Yet so many games were so close. How the USA forward put the ball wrong side of the post when it looked easier to score in last moments of normal time is beyond me: What a chance to advance. Argentina were grateful to Messi for making the goal that got them though in last couple of minutes of extra time. On such f ...

A lot has gone on since my last post. We have witnessed the match of the tournament so far in Brazil v Chile. What a game! Along with millions I watched it live on TV and stayed up longer than I planned - by the time the extra 30 mins and penalties had played out, and the aftermath taken in, it was 3 am and not 2 am to finish in China. Go Brasil - even if a little tired! Then we had Columbia v Uruguay. Every commentator said that, without Suarez, Uruguay lacked an attacking ...

2014-6-27 20:50
Phew! Finally we know who the teams are through to the round of 16. At this stage all of Algeria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Greece, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Switzerland, Uruguay and the USA are winners in the sense of being in the top 16 teams in the world today. Whatever happens next is not failure. Indeed there were many courageous battles in the group stage by teams who went out, but it is customary to award a couple of wooden spo ...

Luis Suarez yet again gave the Media something to get their teeth into with an alleged bite of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini close to the end of the World Cup match v Italy. Suarez has form in this with proven and punished bites playing for Ajax and Liverpool and lengthy bans. It seems that he loses it in stressful situations and drawing 0-0 against 10 men with 10 minutes left and thus about to go out of World Cup is stressful. Yet had Suarez waited a little he would have seen stress reliev ...

2014-6-23 09:10
Until virtually the last kick of USA v Portugal, the title of this post was going to be just: Awesome (a term Americans love) as USA led 2-1 and looked set to book a place in the last 16 and send Cristiano Ronaldo's team home. Yet the fat lady had not finished singing, and there was time for the USA to lose possession and Ronaldo to send in a super cross which Silvestre Varela headed home past a gallant Tim Howard, who had kept out so much before.&n ...
