The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN)—treat Gulf of Mexico as the body’s official name.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Gulf Coast was home to dozens of politically and culturally distinct groups of Native Americans. After Christopher Columbus first made contact with the region in 1492, waves of Spanish explorers entered the gulf and penetrated into the North American interior.
'MEXICO ' is a word first used by the Aztecs in their original natural language. The indigenous tribe founded a city called Tenochtitlan in the valley now occupied by the modern Mexico City. That original city was conquered by the Spanish in 1521.
Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821.
The United States annexed the Republic of Texas, acquired the Mexican Cession by defeating United Mexican States –American War.
After the defeat of its army and the fall of the capital in September 1847, Mexico entered into peace negotiations with the U.S. envoy, Nicholas Trist. The resulting treaty required Mexico to cede 55 percent of its territory including the present-day states of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, and a small portion of Wyoming.
Mexico also relinquished all claims for Texas and recognized the Rio Grande as the southern boundary of Texas.
Google Maps will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America once the new name is updated in the US government’s Geographic Names System.
The update will be visible as Gulf of America within the US, while in Mexico the name will remain the Gulf of Mexico.
Google Maps will also return the name of the Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, to its pre-2015 name of Mount McKinley.
