Donald Trump will rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Denali as part of his Day One actions, incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on X on Monday morning.

Trump will rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” and Denali, the highest mountain peak in North America, Mount McKinley, in an executive order planned to be formally announced Monday.

In 2015, Barack Obama restored the name Denali to the Alaskan mountain — the title used by Alaskan native tribes for centuries. It was called Mount McKinley for nearly a century, after a renaming for former President William McKinley in 1917.

In a press conference two weeks ago, Trump floated the change in name to the Gulf of Mexico, calling it “ours,” and insisting that “it’s appropriate.”
