柴 (chai    the second tone)  means ‘firewood'.   木 (mu,   the forth tone ) shapes like a plant with strong roots under the ground that is ’wood‘ in our native language.
匕(bi, the forth tone) is a knife. Then, what is the first component of 柴? The half part
of 此 shapes like two legs plus the feet.
The picture of 柴 shows that you step on a log and cut it into pieces with an axe.
