(CGTN) Russia will not alienate China to improve its relations with America, Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov said during a recent interview with Global Times.

Denisov made the remarks in response to analysis suggesting that the Biden administration could pursue a strategy of "moderate detente with Russia so as to concentrate on dealing with China."

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet U.S. President Joe Biden in Geneva on June 16 to discuss a full range of issues in the first face-to-face interaction between the two leaders amid escalating U.S.-Russia tensions.

The idea that Russia would alienate China over the possibility of the U.S. temporarily easing tensions with Russia is "very short-sighted," and "Russia is smarter than Americans think," the ambassador said.

He added that Russia does not expect impossible outcomes from the Putin-Biden summit and the two sides are unlikely to resolve important issues at the meeting. The ambassador noted that if the two leaders talk about issues related to China during their meeting, Russia will discuss them with the Chinese side.

"On the whole, the international interests of Russia and China are the same, so our positions on most international issues are also the same," he said.

The Russian diplomat also mentioned previous remarks made by Putin, saying U.S. threats smack of the Soviet Union's fatal mistakes. Putin said on June 4 that the United States was wrong to think that it was "powerful enough" to get away with threatening other countries, a mistake, he said, that led to the downfall of the former Soviet Union.

"He is merely reminding the U.S. that this risk is real, and that much of America's political elite has not yet fully appreciated it," said Denisov.

Your version of Bismarck's "blood and iron" realpolitik is a bit old hat in these days of digital technology. It didn't do anything to prevent the former USSR from disintegrating.

The US continues to maintain its sanctions on Russia over Ukraine which was part of the Russian motherland.

And before he became president, the US' Biden had uttered an undiplomatic gaffe on Russia's Putin. Perhaps at that time Biden didn't think he would become president one day so he wouldn't anytime as a president be meeting with Putin. But now - day after tomorrow in fact. How time, and karma, fly.

Biden is worked up on climate change which means decarbonization. Oil and gas are Russia's main economic staple, as are for its allies in the Middle East, India, Vietnam and DPRK, for that matter Germany.  Economic recovery is the paramount metric these days and Russia's main challenge. So Russia will see the US as a threat to its economic future.

The US is also trying to stick its moral grandstanding of human values on Russia, using Navalry as a lightning rod. Except Navalry has a record of being a fraudster, some say also an MI6 agent.

So what will Biden be talking to Putin about after Biden leaves Brussels following his meeting with Nato whose only preoccupation is containment of Russia?

Score 0/5.

"a mistake": Indeed, it's wryly amusing for this nation's leader to be so despondent about his country's history.

"Russia is smarter than Americans think" - this doesn't sound too complimentary; plenty of irony there given the above statement.
