Why does 海(hai)  mean ‘sea'?   The three-dot-water of 海 represents streams or rivers (running into the sea).  The top of 每(mei) looks like the huge waves on the surface of the sea which come up to you one after another.  Then how do you think of the lower part of 每?  母 means “mother’. We often say that after a long journey rivers will get into the sea in the end. The ancient people believed that all water came from the ocean. Sea was the mother of the rivers.

Dear reader friends, you could image why 母 means "mother"!   Does the dots represent the infants in the mother-body?

We often say water is the source of life.  Science theory proves that the early lives on the Earth were created in the oceans. That was the reason why the ancient Chinese named the ‘sea’ with 母(mother).  We may think that the sea is the hometown of all lives.

Ho, I made a low-level mistake with the last sentence. Don't laugh at me!
