| This post was edited by SEARU at 2016-10-14 10:37 In Chinese traditional society, Tom had to work as apprentice before he latter become a master on his career! --------(学徒三年方为师!)-------------My father also lessoned me in this way: "万事无门不可如" ------------You must find out some rule-like thing as the gate to enter your occupation! Father had helped grandfather to run a small grocery in the Harbin city in 1950s who had deep feeling about the difficulty of the management. He said:"Many successful merchants began their business as apprentice for a long time who first had careful watching on how other people do the job.” My second elder brother had been a butcher for twenty years. It was easy for him to learn how to shave hair from pig in hot water with a special curved knife. ---------The white pig-skin along with its inside flesh is enjoyable pork for customers! Soon the government asked them to peel all pigs to offer the raw materials for the developing leather industry! --------In our county his master was one of the few men who had the skill. However the ‘teacher’ was a bit mean who always did the skilled work all by himself without other people beside! One night in a cold winter the electricity went out while the master was do killing. He had to ask my brother for help to hold the torch in which light he could do the fine job of peeling from the animal. This was the God-given chance for brother to learn how to correctly move knife between the thin skin and the real flesh without any hurting to the former! ----------Up to now, my brother is still thankful to his teacher although it was so hard to grasp the technique!--------since he has made a good fortune from the technology! 教会徒弟,饿死师傅. --------The master would go hungry to death if he (or she)has taught all the knowledge to the apprentice! ----------This is an ugly old saying in China! Dear reader-friends, how do you think about this phenomenon that might also exist in your society! |

On the wall of my colleague‘s office I saw a banner with such a note: 恩师良言一句, 学生受益一生! Teacher's one piece of advice is so meaningful for my whole life! What is the wonderful story behind the silk banner? Mr. Si told me: Tom was his student who did not do quite well on lessons and of course he would be able to enter university through the normal national exam. But from his words and action I judged that he was fit to join the army where he would have bright future! ------------Encouraged by the teacher one word, Tom became a soldier and few years later he was promoted as captain! ---------The student-officer was so thankful to his head-teacher that he presented the red banner when he visited mother-school. |
| Yes, how to be good teacher to properly handle the relationship with children is more meaningful for the society since one human-soul-engineer influence dozens of students every day and thousands of ones in the whole life!
Parent is the kid‘s first teacher whose words and acts play in important role on the young‘s growth! Furthermore all adults are teachers for the kids in the society! So this thread is fit for all readers to have a nice thinking on how to behave before the children! |
| Thank for your interesting comments which has brought me nice memory about the past of my own school life!
In the senior middle school, Mr. Wu was physics teacher who often made jokes in his class. He would bought some medicine with one thermos of hot water for some sick pupil! There was no generation-gap between us. All students enjoy talking with him! In the passage of the teaching building, to my surprise I saw one student asking the Department Dean some toilet paper! What moved me was that the professor really reacted with pleasure! My original main idea on this topic focused on how teachers should deal with textbooks for teaching. Of course, it would be better if you can dance with the young that would influence them in a positive way and that is more noble than parent‘s spoon-feeding or hand-in-hand walking! By the way, I tell you another story: Once a time, before the class I heard the students sing a popular song named "Keep our roots! (把根留住)". But their tone sounded not as pleasant as that on the radio! ---------Maybe it was the God who drove me to sing the same song with deep feeling for correction. ----------I won their applause before the end of the singing! |
| You call your students 'stupid'?
Why would you do that? Not all people are academic or get high scores in examinations, and that does not make them 'stupid'. People have different aptitudes and abilities, and different ways of learning. Not everyone can understand nuclear physics, yet those who can't are not 'stupid' Practical subjects need the students to practice in order to master them. Like language learning, students need to practice on their own in order to improve. such theory is only useful when put into practice. Like expecting students to become fluent English speakers even if they don't speak the language. A good teacher (or master) allows the student to learn through their own experiences and mistakes. the fault is in expecting that everything can be learnt through book and rote learning alone. I would not trust an electrician who can not change a plug, even if they passed a written exam with top marks on the topic. |
| students and apprentices have to understand that they must put in time and effort to become proficient in a skill, particularly if it is a practical skill such as apprentices are expected to learn.
Life is not all about entertainment and being able to deal with dull, monotonous or mundane tasks is an important lesson. sadly both teachers and students think that being entertained is an essential part of learning, however that is not always the case. Nor should students think that the teacher is their parent and expect the hand-holding many parents still give to their adult child. Teachers are not parents and therefore should not be expected to 'entertain' their students the whole time or spoon-feed the students. |
| In that university I attended on report meeting hosted by Mr. Shao who was quite talkative with abroad-study experience. He and his classmate Mr.Cheng Jing-run and other five scholars were taught by Mr. Hua Luo-geng. All of them were state-level scientists who did research work led by Mr. Hua. They often discussed professional questions together in a family-like atmosphere. ---------Pofessor Shao said it had taken them 13 days to learn one complicated theorem! He praised Mr.Hua as a great leader on science who always encouraged the young to do exploring work! ----------
He explained it in this way: In ancient time, it was enough for a master to teach his apprentice how to make candlesticks and how to light it in the old way (without modern match)!----------But it can not be always going like this forever for human! Or who would invent electric light? Let's draw some conclusion: So a clever teacher should tell all he knows in an art way through which he could arouse pupils‘ interest and let them become strong on research. Kowledge is limited and how to get knowledge is unlimited! |
