China’s national college entrance exams, also known as the gaokao, will kick off on June 7th. Due to the relatively low admission rate, the three-day-long exam has been described as 'thousands of troops on a single-log bridge'. The scores of gaokao are the only criteria to judge if they can get into university and what university they can attend. Despite its many flaws and difficulties, gaokao has been regarded by many, especially those from rural areas as the only chance to change their destiny. Is it fair that a single examination defines a student's fate? What systems does your country adopt during college admission? Are grades the only criteria for selecting students? Feel free to leave your comments.

The gaokao can't be the thoughest .we all had such exams to enter university .It is a normal thing ,so take it not as being special .
Everywhere in the world believe grades are the yard stick to enter the university .in some cases ,they consider what we call matured Students .matured Students are those who are no more Students and are working .they consider matured Students experience and offer them some interviews .grades are not considered .
Its raining in Gz now just indoors

We used to think the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for the IITs in India used to be one of the world's toughest exam, until it has got watered down to accommodate more 'castes'.... Political games have lowered the standards..
How has the standard of the Gaokao been maintained?

The main problem with the gaokao is the sheer amount of subjects. In Britain, we begin to specialise. Instead of doing lots of topics we choose four or five that are suitable for our needs.

For example, if you want to go to university and study maths, English, P.E., Ideology, Art are 4 subjects you could scrap straight away and save them a lot of time. Why in the name of hell would a mathematician need to draw with a pencil??? It wastes the students time and this I believe is the main issue. Likewise, if you want to study art, I don't think English and Maths are necessary, neither is P.E. ideology, history geography or physics. The students time could be spent specialising but instead is wasted studying many pointless subjects that they will forget five minutes after the gaokao exam is over
You know that every time I try to go
Where I really want to be
It's already where I am
'Cause I'm already there

The ordinary Chinese have no choice but to struggle with the others to join the awful exam.
What is left is nothing but a bitter memory.
The most pathetic is what they have learnt was old and useless skills.
The mind and perspective of the Chinese people were confined from the beginning.
