The main problem with the gaokao is the sheer amount of subjects. In Britain, we begin to specialise ...

Actually, in China, the educational high school system is divided in between a science branch and an arts branch! I have one daughter who went the science path and the other the arts!

Whether gaokao is toughest in the world, I do not know.......but not important.

Is the GaoKao fair?
As we know , the Olympic Games is the great examinations for the athletes coming from all over the world . That tells you who are the champions in some particular fields. The competitions are carried out by professional judges according to the strict rules.
Even so , I don’t think it is fair to all the globe-citizens! Why? There are seven billions of people on the earth , and only very few of them could be recognized and be trained as athletes and it is luck for those who could take part in the games and get the medals !
There must be a lot of real potential heroes who have missed the great chance !
So is the Olympic , let alone the so-called college entrance exams in China !
In fact, there is no perfect rules or systems in the world that is one- hundred-percent reasonable !

The GaoKao has played an important role in the development of Chinese education and national economy , what we should do is to make it more fair and workable. Or let us invent new things to replace it, that would do better job than the old method !
Childish pure  mindset can simplify your life which let you live in a light way! Without man-made troubles you will work in high efficiency!

Really? I have spoken to many students in china who said they have to sit every exam. Even when they are in university, English is conpulsory for art and music students bizarrely.

Your daughters are lucky though, I wish them well
You know that every time I try to go
Where I really want to be
It's already where I am
'Cause I'm already there

I hear plans are  afoot to remove English from Gaokao, according to the Chinese press. Which would mean some Chinese students would not have  to air gripes about English studies anymore.
