Tiantian was dying because of a malignant brain tumour. And his mother was suffering uremia. Lu proposed that after Tiantian passed away, Zhou should take the operation to transplant Tiantian's kidney into her own body.

Tiantian's tumor relapsed and got worse on September, 2013, after the first operation done in Wuhan province. Tiantian had been blind since January, 2014, and became paralyzed on February 11, 2014.
