While the world is focused on Sochi and Kiev, or on Caracas and Bangkok, China should not forget to give Australia its due share of attention, as its advisers and columnists to the US government and public continue to imply that US security is dependent on containing a China that so far, only seeks to safeguard its sovereignty over its existing, historically verifiable, territories, rather than venture far afield to attack an America that can more that pay back whatever it receives, in kind.
And yet, the din of demagoguery masquerading as expertise of "China hands" from Australia, or embedded in the US government as Australian advisers, permeate the US think tank circuit and news media.
Kevin Rudd, ex-PM of Australia, was widely trumpeted as a "China Hand" who can speak fluent Mandarin, as if fluency in Mandarin makes him an expert on China's motives and agenda. His definition of a "China Threat" as that of a rapidly rising power that is a non-English-speaking country, on the other hand, tells us that all his fluency in Chinese has nothing with this very Australian and very Apartheid view of China. Any Australian can tell you as much without knowing a single word of Chinese.
The sidelining of a true American citizen and patriot, Henry Kissinger, in favor of an Australian, loyal subject of the Queen, is a practical joke, were it not so seriously detrimental to the US national interest, as to pit the lives, property, and prosperity of an entire superpower nation against a country emerging from third world poverty and colonial mistreatment, all for what? All for the Englishman's fear of a country that does not speak English! Never mind that Japan does not speak English either - by choice.
Any true scholar of the Chinese language and civilization would come to the opposite conclusion rather quickly. China's groans and grumblings resemble more those of a horse or mule being whipped to work beyond its biological limits, than those of an avaricious hyena howling for more flesh and more blood. No, China does not need to be contained. It needs to be constructively engaged.
