As I had surmised earlier, tackling the issues, while very important, is a mere prelude to the creation of something more fundamental that is unlocks every dispute, and that somethng is called "TRUST".
Our whole currency and credit system is based on trust. We trust that a piece of paper or a number in the proper digital setting will deliver to us goods and services that represent "all that money can buy". On the back of the dollar bill is a reminder that it is backed by the full faith and credit of the US government. Well, here, we are not talking about how many "dollars" or concessions changed hands between Obama and Xi. We are talking about something more fundamental in that they have established a new political currency that both sides can use to keep score of what they owe each other, and that new political currency is rooted in their personal trust that the other side will keep its promises, just as each vows to do his part.
Trust, on a political level, represents "all that power can get".
And that is a lot more than what money can buy. In fact, it affects the exchange rates of their currencies. It affects trade, investment, and loans. Beyond these obvious beneficiaries of trust between two countries, is the fact that trust also determines the likelihood of war and peace. Thus, it is good to know that Obama immediately invested this currency into peace, by saying that the US has no intention to stop the peaceful rise of China, and in fact, welcomes it.
No more the PIVOT to Asia rhetoric that is a thinly veiled clarion call to the Allies to encircle China and prepare for the worst. Instead, we hear a new rhetoric of mutual help and cooperation. Many ultra-nationalists accuse Obama of selling out America to China. To them, China is the same as their religious hate object, the devil. Hating evil is not hating the evil that lurks behind every man's thought, but simply hating China. Having peace with China to them, is impossible, because they have arrogated to themselves the authority and power of Divine Judgment, ignoring a major pillar of morality, of treating others as one would want others to treat oneself.
Obama shows exceptional foresight and courage to accept the challenge of peace, and reject the temptation of war. For this, and this alone, one must say, "Contact, Mr. President, has been made. China is on the channel. Please go ahead."
