When I was in the Gambia, there was something about the cars there that was very telling. Many of the older cars on the road, especially taxis, were old Mercedes models, but all of the new cars sitting in dealership lots were Chinese.

Also, I read Moyo's book while I was working in Africa. I thought it was spot on. I am a large supporter of trade replacing aid. Personally, I recommend everyone research microfinancing organizations if you are looking to make donations of any sort. They allow people, especially women, to start their own small businesses, becoming self-reliant and providing jobs for their own communities in the process.
