A government official from Taizhou, Jiangsu Province knelt down in front of residents and begged for their forgiveness after he was cornered in a restaurant drinking high-end wine and enjoying a luxurious meal, China Radio International reported on Sunday.
A photo of the official, whose name has not been revealed but who was identified as being affiliated with the Binjiang industrial park in Taizhou, went viral on the Internet after the incident took place on Friday night.
The photo captured the official kneeling on a table, apologizing and begging through a loudspeaker to an angry crowd that had surrounded him to let him leave.
Video clips showed the official enjoying a luxurious meal at the entertainment center of the Binjiang industrial park when the crowd broke in. Leftovers included puffer fish and long-tailed anchovy, both known for their hefty price tags.
Local residents claimed that they had seen luxury cars driving in and out of the center nearly every day. After someone found out that officials were splurging taxpayers' money on expensive meals, hundreds of angry residents gathered around the center and demanded an explanation.
The authorities at Taizhou medical high-tech development zone, where the Binjiang industrial park is located, promised to thoroughly investigate the case. It is unknown within which time frame this investigation will be launched.
China launched a new set of rules in December 2012 that forbids officials from spending public funds on expensive meals. In January, the director of the bureau of finance in Qiongzhong county, Hainan Province, was sacked after he spent more than 15,000 yuan ($2,428) on three meals. (Sina)
