The current focus of the media on North Korea has put Diaoyudao out of the public mind.  But the real test of China's ability to defend its sovereignty is not in the Korean peninsula, where the North Koreans have taken it upon themselves to fight for their own national interest, foremost of which appears to be that of a reunification of the Korean nation.  North Korea, like North Vietnam, is not even remotely interested in the Cold War, but rather its goal of national reunification.  This is why North Korea wants to talk seriously to the US, and merely good-humors China with its courtesy calls.

China, on the other hand, is engrossed with the Cold War, to the detriment of its own national sovereignty over Diaoyudao.

In the North Korean paradigm, China's response to Japanese occupation of Dioayudao should have been, "Cold War, my foot!  Take your Nazi boot off my toe, right now!"  Instead, China grits its teeth, grins to the West, and gets laughed behind its back by the North Koreans.

Diaoyudao - against the War-Criminal-Worshipping Shinto-Cult Japanese Neo-Nazi's - is the real litmus test of the "China dream", to see if it is based on real sovereignty, or made of gossamers of wishful fantasy.

So far, Diaoyudao being a part of China's sovereign territory has remained more of a dream than a reality.

With more humiliating dreams like this, China would better wake up, and soon.
