Hong Kong is one of the world’s worst cities for light pollution. Its night skies are around 1,000 times brighter than globally accepted levels, researchers from Hong Kong University have said, days ahead of the Earth Hour event.

Even in the evening, the city is lit up like daytime, making residents struggle to have a decent night sleep. Unregulated lighting on high rises and neon advertisements in the densely populated city are believed to be the culprit.

Hong Kong has no law controlling external lighting, researchers say, which has made light pollution much worse than in other metropolises, including London and Sydney.
Researchers also suggested reducing the amount of lighting, which could lead to decrease a number of adverse health effects in humans and nocturnal wildlife.
