The military tried LSD and who knows what else but the thing that worked best was so simple, a com ...
Communism is a stateless, classless society where there is no money and presumably everybody's needs are met because technology and society have advanced to the point where it can be done with ease. Everyone is free to pursue whatever work or hobby they enjoy. It has never existed and in theory, could only exist after an extended period of (worldwide) socialism.
According to Marxist theory, socialism is a stage of development where the working class has overthrown the capitalist ruling class, taking control of the state and the means of production. Marx speculated that socialist revolutions would occur in the most advanced industrial nations first. When self-styled "communist" revolutions took place in Russia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, etc. everyone took that to mean that Marx was wrong, because these were primarily agrarian societies with little industrial development compared to the more developed countries at the time.
However, I think that Marx is still right. All of those previous countries mentioned are regressing (or progressing?) to the capitalist stage in varying degrees, suggesting that the capitalist stage cannot be skipped. You just have to ride it out until society/technology/economics is ready. Lenin saw this problem and tried to address it with state capitalism, forcing rapid industrialization on Russia so that they could one day progress to socialism. Unfortunately, as it turned out, regular ol' capitalism was more efficient at this. China has been taking a page from this book, successfully mixing state capitalism with regular free market capitalism wherever it is most beneficial, calling it "Socialism with Chinese characteristics." But it is not socialism. Not yet.
So, to sum up: Marx was right, but you cannot skip capitalism, no matter what problems it causes. Oh, and North Korea is all kinds of messed up, but they are not representative of socialism or communism. China is better, but they are still state capitalist. North Korea should be like China.
