Dear forumites,

China is facing its once-in-a-decade leadership change this fall. Looking back, the past 10 years have seen tremendous changes in China. China has become the world’s largest economy behind the US, making it a leading engine of the global economic recovery. With growing economic prosperity, China has been playing an increasingly important role on the world stage.

We’d like to ask all our readers home and abroad to share your personal observations about what has happened in China over the past 10 years. How do you view China now and then? What kind of changes have you experienced or witnessed in the past decade? What suggestions do you have for China’s future? And best wishes for China are also welcome.

Sign up now and share your stories with us. No style limit, i.e., you can write a comment or a story. Words, pictures and videos are all welcome.

We will publish some of the pieces in the China Daily newspaper and its portal platform. Also, after we use your article, photo or video on our website or paper, we will send you a special gift.

You can send us an email at comment@chinadaily.com.cn or leave your post here. Please make sure to leave your address, postal code, and telephone number in case we need the information to send your gift. And we also want your photo so we can use it if we use your work. We welcome your thoughts, but we do reserve the right to edit submissions deemed inappropriate.

I have been dealing in China for 12 years.
However. I can only say that I have only frequented Guangdong, only going a couple of times each year for two or three weeks at a time.
On my first occasion I was shocked at the working conditions and amazed at how poor the roads were (I could only compare what i saw with conditions in Europe, mainly the UK).

As far as those two issues are concerned the working conditions have greatly improved as have the roads and travel.

The thing I am most grateful these days is for the introduction of Western Toilets

What I do not like are ignorance, stupidity, chauvinism and bigotry. The other party has as much right as I have until it resorts to insults and nuisance.

6 years ago, when I visited China first time - I was shocked, that roads are better then in Poland
(mainly comparing streets in the city, and inter-city roads)

OK, now my own story.
First three impressions, I think - most important for me.

First impression on China: one big building place. And it is also for today.

Second impression: safe place. I can go in the middle of the night by some back-street, and nothing wrong happens. Yes, it is also by the kind, and amount of penalties for crimes aginst life and health. But it is OK for me as long as I'm not criminal.

Third impression: dirty streets, people throwing garbage everywhere, even under own feet. This have not been changed. But should - as soon as possible, for both social and health-related reasons. City is not a village, and plastic bottle is not piece of paper that can be dissolved by first rain.

Living changed a lot.

Ten years ago, we lived in government-owned apartments.
Now, we live in private-owned apartments.

Ten years ago, we could buy an apartment at 10 thousand yuan.
This year, I bought an apartment at nearly 1 million yuan.

Ten years ago, the apartment had two large bedrooms and 1 small guestroom (living room).
Now, the apartment had two or three small bedrooms and 1 large guestroom (living room).

Ten years ago, we call our apartment buildings by dormitory of enterprise (DanWei SuShe).
Now, we call our apartment buildings by community.

Transport changed a lot.

Ten years ago, my train travel was free of charge. A sleeper to anywhere cost me only 2 yuan.
Now, no free train travel service.

Ten years ago, train travel reminded us of Green cheap train and crowded carriage.
Now, train travel reminds us of the risk of safety and high speed.

Ten years ago, we have to choose train for long trip.
Now, we have three choices: Car, Train, or Flight.

Ten years ago, few of us owned a car.
Now, many of us have cars.

Ten years ago, I used to get sth by ordinary letters.
Now, I used to get sth by express and Email.

You seem to have spent rather a lot of money then-about 20 years wages for the average worker in China with a single purchase.
