Iran to lose Russia’s support?

Tehran can lose Moscow’s support in the nuclear issue if it does not retract its lawsuit seeking compensation over Moscow's refusal to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missile systems, a source in the Russian government stated Thursday. Moscow also wants Iran to revise its compensation claims of 4 bln dollars – one third of Russia’s weapon selling revenue.

It was an unpleasant surprise when Iran went to the Geneva-based Arbitration Court as Russia is one of a few Iran’s remaining allies. Russian diplomats have been talking about the withdrawal of the suit for the past several months and if Iran doesn’t change its stance it will face isolation while Russia’s reputation will not be affected at all, says NATO Defense College researcher in Rome, retired Col. Oleg Kulakov.

"By filing a lawsuit Iran is playing a dangerous game as Russia still supports the country in some issues. Tehran has no reasons to quarrel with Russia as they can possibly act together in the Middle East arena."

Kulakov believes that the action was prompted by Western lobbyists who want to draw Russia and Tehran apart.

"The West has its game –to split Russia and Iran with the help of Tehran itself. The West won this round. The Geneva Court will review the case when Iran is under valid sanctions and in this case Russia is under pressure both legally and politically."

The compensation sum claimed by Iran is also surprising . It comprises several sums, explains expert in Oriental Studies Irina Fedorova.

"These 4 bln include a 900-mln dollar deal and a pre-payment which Russia has already returned to Iran. Iran wants to recover three billions of losses born by the country since 1996 which it allegedly spent on preparations to install the system. Iran also wants 1 bln to reimburse moral damage. Thus, even if the Court reviews the case it’s doesn’t mean that Iran will get all the money."

Russia’s President signed a refusal to supply Iran with S-300 air defense missile systems under a UN resolution banning imports of certain weapons to Iran. Tehran was frustrated over the decision and filed a law suit in May 2011.
