in meantime great leader of Persia and friend of Assad:

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the Western powers seek to save the Israeli regime following the sweeping wave of Islamic Awakening in the region.

“The US and the West seek to rescue the Zionist regime [of Israel] after the [recent] regional developments,” said President Ahmadinejad Thursday night in a meeting with representatives of student scientific and cultural organizations in Tehran.

To accomplish their objective, the West has incited all kinds of ethnic, tribal and racial feuds and this requires that we deal with the recent developments wisely, he emphasized.

Insisting that the West should not be allowed to trigger a “Shia-Sunni war” in the region, the president said, “We should not merely act as a news organization with respect to regional developments. We must perform from a position of taking control and leadership of such events.”

At the beginning of the three-hour meeting representatives of Iranian student groups presented their views, criticisms and questions to the president.

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti)

Russian warships engaged in drills in the Mediterranean Sea may enter Russia’s naval re-supply and maintenance base in Syria’s Tartus, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

Russian media reported earlier this week that three large landing ships from the Russian flotilla are planning to make a port call in Tartus. Earlier on Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said the port call was unnecessary and “not planned.”

Later in the day, the ministry said that the schedule of the flotilla’s mission might be extended to include entry into the Black Sea, and the ships will have to replenish stocks.

"The [naval] command will plan re-supplying the ships’ stocks either via support vessels or via Russia’s material and technical support base in Tartus,” the Defense Ministry said.

Black Sea Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Alexander Fedosenkov said last week Russian warships in the Mediterranean are preparing for naval drills due in September, and are not carrying out any military tasks in Syria.

The Russian flotilla comprises five warships from the Northern and Baltic fleets, plus escort vessels. On Saturday a group of Northern Fleet vessels, led by the Vice Admiral Kulakov destroyer, will join the flotilla.

Syria’s opposition National Council earlier expressed its concern about the possibility of Russian warships entering Tartus.

The Tartus base, Russia’s only naval facility outside the former Soviet Union, is used for repair and refueling of warships. The Russian Navy needs the base to support Russian warships in the Mediterranean, as well as those on anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Russian ships in Syria’s Tartus counters US anti-Syria stance

Sat Aug 4, 2012 6

Of course appearance of three big marine vessels in Tartus these days while the United States proclaims intensifying the supply of weapon and financing… militarized groups in [the] Syrian opposition, that means that it is the response of Russia on Western American stance towards Syria.”

Middle East expert Vyacheslav Maluzov

A Middle East expert says Russia’s recent deployment of vessels to the Syrian port city of Tartus counters the Western stance on Syria, Press TV reports.

“Of course appearance of three big marine vessels in Tartus these days while the United States proclaims intensifying the supply of weapon and financing… militarized groups in [the] Syrian opposition, that means that it is the response of Russia on Western American stance towards Syria,” said Vyacheslav Maluzov in an interview with Press TV on Saturday.

On Friday, the Russian military said Moscow is sending three military ships with up to 120 armed navy personnel on board to its base at Tartus.

The ships are currently conducting planned exercises in the Mediterranean Sea and after visiting Tartus they will head for the Bosphorus and the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, according to an unnamed Russian military source.

“I think it is [a] political appearance, [a] political signal to the United States, to Turkey who are making maneuvers on Syrian borders by tanks and others that Russia will not retire from its position in nearest future,” Maluzov stated.

“So I think that if we take into consideration the position of Kofi Annan, his retirement and the discussion of issue of Syria in [the] General Assembly of the United Nations… it is obvious that the United States does not want to leave the position of encouraging militarized groups for military action in Syria,” Maluzov added, referring to the resignation of UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan.

On August 2, Annan announced that he will quit his position as the special envoy to Syria at the end of the month.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry expressed regret about the resignation of Annan.

On August 3, the UN General Assembly passed a non-binding resolution on Syria, proposed by Saudi Arabia, which criticized the Security Council and the Syrian government.

However, Russia and China condemned the resolution and said it undermined peace efforts.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil in Syria that began in March 2011.
