In recent years, the Zhujiang New Town (Zhujiang Xin Cheng - 珠江新城) district has become one of Guangzhou's hottest addresses. A southward extension of Tianhe district's CBD, the New Town also hosts brand-new cultural venues, sought-after accommodation and plenty of small businesses worth checking out.
Since new restaurants and cute shops are popping up as fast as shopping malls are planned in the rest of the city, here are a few things to do and places to look for in Zhujiang New Town.
1) Sightseeing - Huangpu Dadao and Haixin Sha Tourist Park
Bordered by Huangpu Dadao to the north and the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang, 珠江) to the south, the pearl of the district is the long, eye-shaped pedestrianised park that stretches between lanes of Zhujiang Dadao. It was developed, in part, for tourist's enjoyment of the 2010's Asian Games but remains a great escape from the traffic and concrete landscapes of the rest of the city.
Sculpted bushes, seasonal flowers and quirky shaded benches await people out to catch the urban beauty of some of Guangzhou's most lauded modern architecture. Many of the city's highest-end hotels are located along this promenade, including the Grand Hyattand the Ritz-Carlton. But the city's main building achievements are all perched on the banks of the river. The treasure-box-shaped Guangdong Provincial Museum, the Guangzhou Opera Housedesigned by Zaha Hadid and the Guangzhou Library(still under construction at the time of writing) are all feathers in Guangzhou's architectural cap.
This is a fine place to view one of Guangzhou's other famous landmarks, the Canton Tower. The tower is across the river from Haixinsha Tourist Park, where the Asian Games' opening ceremony was held.
2) International restaurants - Xing Sheng street
A cluster of new restaurants, cafes and bars have opened on the south side of Xingsheng Street, just northwest of the Liede Metro Station.
Here, hungry (or perhaps thirsty) diners can find the new location of Hooley's Irish Pub. Other nearby restaurants include Soon Deli, a branch of the People's Cafe, which offers organic fare, VandaThai and Vietnamese restaurant and Chinese restaurant Mr. Law.
3) Imported food - Sharefoods and SafeMax
While you're in the area enjoying the cultural sites or having a nice meal, why not check grocery shopping off your to-do list? Boutique imported food store Sharefoodshas a selection of deli meats and cheeses and a wide array of European and North American packaged goods.
On the third floor of the same block, on the corner with Xingsheng Street, is SafeMax, open 24 hours. Supermarket with a warehouse feel, they have all the things you usually find in a supermarket, plus imported goodies from the U.S.A.

4) Happy hours – Huajiu street
The Baolin Garden complex boasts a strip of bars and eateries along Huajiu Street and around the corner. Two of Guangzhou's favourite expat bars have branches – The Tavernand The Brew – but just because they're lesser known doesn't mean the other venues along this street won't make your night a special one. Sandwiched between the merriment are two practical stops on this block—a pet groomer's and the tiny Kitchen Carnivalimport food store.

The streets of Zhujiang New Town hide unexpected treats for the wandering traveller. For example, Boomerang Bakery, an Australian purveyor of meat pies, baked goods and imported beer, is across the street from Tianhe Middle school on Huacheng Road. Next door is a quirky florist-cafe called In Seed.
A few doors down and one floor up from the cafes on the Xing Sheng Street is a Korean convenience store called Food. They stock Korean packaged food and dry goods. Across the parking lot and around the corner from the EurAm Medical Center is a newish American-style barbecue restaurant called Cowboy Express.
