Guns and politics are often interlinked. In America the Second Amendment enshrines the right of Americans to bear firearms while in China it was Mao who famously commented that 'political power grows from the barrel of a gun' (枪杆子里面出政权- qianganzi lichu zhengquan). Guns also had a large part to play in the violent birth of both nation states. But modern America, and indeed many Western countries, have a very different relationship with guns than modern China does. Rarely a day passes in America or Western Europe where a shooting does not feature in the news, while in China an event like the fatal shooting in Nanjing last month of a man at a bank made headlines because of its relative unusualness. Just why is there so much less gun crime in China compared to Western countries, despite its size and the enormous task faced by the authorities in policing firearms?

The second amendment was ratified in 1791 so it made sense back then.
The new country was full of wild animals that could be killed for food and
plenty of land to steal from the native Americans. Also, law enforcement was
not readily available over huge portions of the land.
But they couldn't have predicted what the future would hold.
China has the opportunity to learn from America's mistakes and keep the
general population free of guns. There really is no use for them in a modern society.
America could overturn the 2nd amendment but it would take decades to rid the
country of the hundreds of millions of guns hiding away in private homes.
Also, there are so many immature and fearful people here that it would be impossible
to get 38 states to ratify an amendment to supersede the 2nd amendment.
It's hopeless here. Hopefully China will be wiser.

DSeeing,

you were right in much of your first post, but in one detail you erred pointedly: Gun-cont ...

wait,
gun control being strict in western europe?
Is that how you describe fully automatic rifles in every swiss household?
What's the difference if a homocide or Injury is done with a gun or by any other means, when the results are the same?
How about Dseeing got out the general homocide rates of China compared to well armed Switzerland?
Swiss firearm homocide rate 0.56 per 100.000, that is with gun laws more liberal in the US.
How is that a significant amount of Gun Crime?
There were more intentional homocides by firearms in neighbouring germany with much stricter gun control, but still a meagre total of 269 in 2002.
