An artical I came across that might be of interest to Mod's and Member's
So what jobs does a Forum Moderator have to do?
- Have a topic actually saying what the rules are and what consequences of breaking them is
- Make sure that the users follow the rules
- Keep content clean
- Help people
- Keep spam away
How to make the rules
The rules are the most important thing on a forum (apart from the content). They declare what is acceptable and what isn’t. These are usually made by the Creator, but if it isn’t, the Forum Moderators can make them.
So what do you need to include?
- The rule. What it is that they aren’t allowed to do
- An example. Give a small example showing what the rule actually means
- The punishment. Tell everyone what the consequences of breaking this rule would be
How to make sure users follow the rules
Enforcing the rules can sometimes be a painful and reputation lowering job. I know that when I had to do it, it made me lose some of my forum friends because they weren’t following the rules.
Easiest way to make sure that they do it is to put in your signature a reminder of where to find the forum rules. Have a hyperlink saying “Please remember to follow the rules, click here to view them”. Maybe also have a message saying “Its nothing personal, its just my job”. Sure, they aren’t necessary, but it is recommended.
If you see someone breaking a rule, Private Message them saying what they have done wrong and how they could maybe change it. If it something serious then you have to take the necessary actions and email them saying why you have taken those actions (as a Forum Moderator you can view emails even if they have them hidden)
How to keep content clean
Forums are usually considered as open but that does not mean people are allowed to go around cussing about everything. Innocent circumstances are fine, but full blown outrages aimed at someone are not.
How best to deal with this is to change the words for stars, and Private Message the person telling them why it has been changed and maybe give them a warning. If in your rules you have stated that people cannot swear then you should take the necessary actions
This is definately the most important job of a Forum Moderator. You have been given this rank because the owners feel you are helpful and good for the forum. So prove you are suitable by helping people. Put in your signature a message such as “If you need any help, Private Message me” or even “If you need any help and I am not online, drop me an email at _____ “
I know that you cannot be on all the time, and I am not saying that you have to be. But try to answer Private Messages or emails as soon as you get them.
Keep spam away
This can probably be the longest job. But if you do this regularly or quickly, you wont have such a large job to do anymore. First of all, what is spam?
Spam is where people are sending 1 word posts such as “lol” or “agreed”. Some good forums also consider meaningless posts spam, eg “I agree. It has got to stop” or “This is such a good thread, nice work”
To keep it away, just delete the post/thread
I hope this article has been helpful. I am going to write more very soon!
