The “King Rhododendron” is growing in Datang Village in the north of Tengchong County. Among over 800 kinds of azaleas in the world, it has been known as the largest rhododendron tree with thick stems and huge flowers.
As early as 60 years ago, the British Royal Museum displayed a specimen that astonished many botanists from all over the world. The specimen was collected from the “King Rhododendron” which has been living for 280 years, and has a height of 25 meters and a diameter of 87 centimeters. Nobody elsewhere claimed that he or she had/has found another thicker and higher one in the late 1970s or so far.
As most of rhododendrons are rare and grow in those areas, of Gaoligong Mountain, with an altitude between 2,250-2,480 meters above the sea level, the “King Rhododendron” has been listed among the key protected plants in China. Each spring sees the “King Rhododendron” bowed with masses of flowers, scarlet and pink. It’s remarkable that the whole plant could span as far as 30 meters in diameter. Visitors could not but marvel at the imposing view.
