Btw, usually it's not an invitation to a meal, but just a greeting. Normally, no matter if we have ...
Reminds me of my first visit to Beijing, I was a nosy laowei, and wandered into a very small hutong, just a winding no throughway lane, and old Mrs Song asked me that question, I replied in my best broken Chinese, "Well, actually, I'm a bit hungry". My Chinese friend at the time told me it's just an old Beijing greetting. I was of course, duly invited in for food, my first taste of "Beijing pizza" amongst other things, beer and my first Er Guo Tou. Me and my Chinese friend spent a whole afternoon with old Mr and Mrs Song, what a delightful couple, they gave me a real Chinese history lesson, there little house was a museum in it's self, they were tough those guys, lived through so much turmoil. "2 fingers of this" Er Guo Tou, "And everything is ok" According to Mr Song, they are both gone now. They lived into there mid 80's. Bless them.
