What you said is no consolation for the poor people in China.

China should strive for first-world standard of living.   That is what
the Chinese people hope for,  and I believe that is also the aim of the Chinese leadership;
but unfortunately some lower levels of government officials are not doing the correct
things to address the problems.

Ive got to say that everyone complaining about how poor China supposedly is have obviously never been to the rest of the third world. Chinese people live much better than the rest of the third world and are lucky to have a stable functioning society.

TrollMasta: Please dont misandertand: we are on CD here, most of us are chinese or live in China, we talk about a chinese problem.

You are right when you remind us that fantastic progress have been ascomplished in China, but it's also sad to see that any debate her eis immediatly ruined by thos parrots who always sing us this old song about the foreigners...5 years on CD, my experience is that the right thing to do is to ignore their annoying old song.

Comparing the poor in China and in other countries is another debate

I think the question here is more about how China became a rich country and let poor/rich gap more and more big...A good thing to say, in my opinion, is that other rich countries development is unsustainable, and that many of us expect China to show another way, but until now, we can just see China walking on the same way as USA or Europe (I mean for the consumption)..

In my post (#48), I should have said China should strive for first-world standard of living with Chinese characteristics, but with no wasteful consumptions or extravagance.

5000 versus 50000+

in any case, numbers denominated in paper tokens are misleading

the question is really what claim over labour you have

it is indeed a pyramid of slaves

You're right !
We should consider the PPP - purchasing power parity of countries per capita instead of GDP per capital
which is very misleading.
China's PPP per capital is much higher than US $5,000 per capital.
Things are so much cheaper in China than in KKK countries, don't you agree?
When you're earning US $5,000 per year in China, you're already RICH !!!

It can only be achieved by continuous exports to open markets in KKK countries,
so please go tell KKK countries to open their markets wider for China's export,
and tell US Senate not to blame on Rmb exchange rate for their own financial troubles.

Just a few years back , China's per capital income was just US $ 1,000,
so in just a few short years  it has reached US $5,000  already,
and China's total GDP is 1/3 of US total GDP,
where the former Soviet Union never ever achieved,
the highest total GDP of the former Soviet Union  was just 1/10 of the US total GDP.

so it won't be long that China's per capital GDP will hit US $10,000 ,
and total GDP may even eclipse KKK's,
then there'll be fewer poor people in China.
Please don't shoot, I'm just a babe.
