The answer would be A: crushing all dissent and denying access to the local language!
See the Poynings Law of 1494, the Acts of Supremacy of 1534, the School Establishment Act of 1616, and t ...

Hi and welcome ................

Interesting ideas and I will try to find some time to look at that ..........

Although, you cannot deny a language unless the person being denied understands the new one  ............

It would not be possible to learn a new language overnight ........

Well, not for me anyway .........

This would maybe be a much later England after 1066 and the Norman invasion ........

By the 13th century the indigenous English spoke both English and a smattering of French .......

Therefore, it would be an attempt to impose a set of proscribed semantics on a population .........

Middle English comes from the dichotomy of French rulers who needed the base proletariat ....

Especially after long wars and devastating plagues ...........

As to crushing a local language ........

The Welsh still speak Welsh and the Gaelic peoples who can be bothered, still speak Gaelic ......

As stated, 'motivation' is a core human value .........

Cheers .........

"Some people hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to get colonized by. We're ruled by effete a$$ho ...

You may be right about motivation, but on the flip-side, it's quite easy to de-motivate people through systematic denigration of their language and culture. Just look at blacks in America post-Jim Crow. Almost all of the gains that had been made in the aftermath of the Civil War (did you know we had 17 black US Congressmen from 1865-1876?) were effectively undone overnight by laws that kept blacks from holding office, getting a good education, and voting. It's not too far from what was done in Scotland after the Highland Rebellions and in Ireland during Cromwells' reign.

But there's definitely something of a Gaelic revival underway. Irish holds the status of national language, and it is taught as a required course in all state-funded schools and promoted to the general public through mass media. In 2005, the Scottish Parliament passed the Gaelic Language Act, which marks the first step in recognizing Gaelic as an official language. And according to the 2001 census, 2.2% of Isle of Man residents now speak Manx in the home, and to some of them have been born the first new generation of L1 speakers in over a century.

Let's just hope the motivation to learn it is still there: Tha mi ag ionnsachadh Gàidhlig.

Yes, if the economy is on the up ..........

The people flow ........

But if it dips ..........

Time to rethink, regroup and isolate from those factors which are bringing it down .......

Scotland went through this with oil ..........

Wow, we are being milked ...... !

Let us do something .....

Ooops it is gone  ..........

Oh dear, but now we are pi$$ed off ..................
