According to Chinese statistics,   the Chinese shipbuilding industry can produce over 65 million tonnes of ships every year.

If only 1% of the Chinese shipyards production capabilities were allocated to building aircraft carriers,  the Chinese shipyards could produce 650,000 tonnes of ships,  or 10 aircraft carriers of 65,000 tonnes every year.

Therefore,   China should be building 10 aircraft carriers of 65,000 tonnes every year.

China should be building 60 aircraft carriers of 65,000 tonnes in total.

As well,  Chinese shipyards should also produce 20 small aircraft carriers of 15,000 tonnes each every year.  That would only require another 300,000 tonnes of shipbuilding production capacity every year.

That would require a total of 950,000 tonnes of shipbuilding capability every year,  which should be no problem since the total shipbuilding capability of Chinese shipyards is projected to exceed 95 million tonnes of ships every year very soon.

The Chinese navy should aim to have 60 aircraft carriers of 65,000 tonnes as well as another 120 smaller aircraft carriers of 15,000 tonnes.

In total,  China should aim to have 180 aircraft carriers by the year 2016.

that would be overkill. the u.s. currently have 20 carriers, 11 in service, 6 in reserve, and 3 under construction.

12 varyag class for the east china sea/taiwan straght/chinese coastal region to keep japan and the 7th fleet at a distance; 6 in the south china sea to police the sea lane of the region; 12 for the indian ocean; 6 for the atlantic and 6 for the pacific is just about right. 6 in dry dock for maintenance, few more under construction, 60 in all is just about right.

with medium carriers, you are more spread with medium carriers, you are not putting all your eggs in one basket.
Putin's a killer. This was the claim made by Fox News journalist; Bill O'Reilly during his recent interview with Donald Trump. Trump's reply came in the form of a simple question. What, you think our country's so innocent?

You are quite right.

China only needs 60 medium sized aircraft carriers of 65,000 tonnes to defend the ancestral land.  (  ancestral land is a much better translation of zu guo than mother land )

I was just adding the smaller amphibious assault carriers to the grand total.

After all,  the US has 12 amphibious assault carriers that can carry fixed wing aircraft as well as helicopters.

The smaller aircraft carriers are cheap and they offer more flexibility.

Why not build another 120 smaller aircraft carriers,  just in case some of the larger medium sized carriers get sunk by anti ship missiles?

that is where mr. comono draken's strategy of vstol xxj's comes into play...

it is also where i think the j-20 may also have a contribution to china's naval air power. because, as this airforce general unintentionally leaked in an interview in cctv in '09. there are two distinct versions of the xxj and this j-20 design lends itself to what this general had gestured...

just imagine every aegis destroyer to be armed with a dozen or so unique chinese jump jets. all that's needed is a b-train like an 18 wheeler towed in the behind of chinese destroyers and lo and behold, you have a mini airforce in every surface ship.

for that to work and for that to be an affective force, such xxj will have to be more efficient meaning greater ranges and more speedy de gonzalas than the subsonic (400-450 MPH) fighters that the harrier is. Mach-1.2 up to Mach 1.7 or 8 would be cool.

In  addition to the 60 midsize aircraft carriers,  how about China building some ocean going floating platforms which could be towed around the world and deployed as a floating platform aircraft launching pad,  a giant floating air naval base,  which could accommodate hundreds of fixed wing aircrafts.

What about building another 12 giant floating platforms which could be deployed around the world as huge air naval bases wherever needed?

Why would China need such vessels, in such numbers, if the stated policy of the Chinese government is "peaceful development"? These vessels aren't built for defence, they're purely a power projection force and as such, are built for the offense. What ambitions does China have if you think that these vessels should be procured at all, let alone in these quantities? Something sinister maybe? Empirical ambitions maybe? Hmmm, the mind boggles!
