Following is a poem that has caused quite a stir among Chinese around the world. It appeared on the Internet some time ago and has since gone viral, popping up on thousands of blogs and Web sites, in both English and Chinese. Its authorship could not be confirmed, but is said to be written by a Chinese American Duo-liang Lin, a retired professor in physics at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

As the poem said "When we were the Sick Man of Asia, we were called The Yellow Peril. When we are billed to be the next Superpower, we are called The Threat", what do you, the Westerners, really want from China? And the bias and prejudice seems to be growing by the day. In this context, how the West and China could communicate effectively with each other is really an issue that the Westerners and Chinese alike should both ponder at.

This poem certainly provides some food for thought.

The poem is pasted here both in English and in Chinese. (Note: The English version was published by the Washington Post.)

  The Poem  (in English)

  What Do You Really Want from Us?

  When we were the Sick Man of Asia, we were called The Yellow Peril.

  When we are billed to be the next Superpower, we are called The Threat.

  When we closed our doors, you smuggled drugs to open markets.

  When we embrace Free Trade, You blame us for taking away your jobs.

  When we were falling apart, You marched in your troops and wanted your fair share.

  When we tried to put the broken pieces back together again, Free Tibet you screamed, It Was an Invasion!

  When tried Communism, you hated us for being Communist.

  When we embrace Capitalism, you hate us for being Capitalist.

  When we have a billion people, you said we were destroying the planet.

  When we tried limiting our numbers, you said we abused human rights.

  When we were poor, you thought we were dogs.

  When we loan you cash, you blame us for your national debts.

  When we build our industries, you call us Polluters.

  When we  you goods, you blame us for global warming.

  When we buy oil, you call it exploitation and genocide.

  When you go to war for oil, you call it liberation.

  When we were lost in chaos and rampage, you demanded rules of law.

  When we uphold law and order against violence, you call it violating human rights.

  When we were silent, you said you wanted us to have free speech.

  When we are silent no more, you say we are brainwashed-xenophobes.

  “Why do you hate us so much”we asked.

  “No,” you answered, “we don't hate you.”

  We don't hate you either, But, do you understand us?

  “Of course we do, ”you said, “We have AFP, CNN and BBC's ??????”

  What do you really want from us?

  Think hard first, then answer ?????? Because you only get so many chances.

  Enough is Enough, Enough Hypocrisy for This One World.

  We want One World, One Dream, and Peace on Earth.

  This Big Blue Earth is Big Enough for all of Us.

  我们是东亚病夫时,我们被说是黄祸;

  那时我们闭关自守,你走私鸦片来强开门户;

  那时我们风雨飘摇,你铁蹄犯境要求机会均等;

  我们试行马列救国,你痛恨我们成为共党分子;

  当我们的人口到达十亿,你说我们在摧毁地球;

  那时我们一贫如洗,你视我们贱如狗;

  我们发展工业了,你说我们是污染者;

  我们购买石油,你说我们取兼灭族;

  那时我们动乱无序,你说我们没有法治;

  我们静默无声时,你说我们欠缺言论自由;

Good thread!

And good questions that have been puzzeling many Chinese for a long time.

Yet, whatever answers we get from the Westeners we should always stick to the things and the path we believe are right for China.

The reason why China is perceived so negatively has been widely discussed in this forum already.
I believe what is getting most people afraid is China's slow social development. While she is developing pretty fast economically, people have to be considered as modern slaves: they can't afford a house, nearly can't afford a house, and all the money flows into a few rich people's pocket.

When the government pumped money into the markets during the economic crisis to escaped a recession, the number of billionaires in China increased from 10 to 128 - but people are paying for it with increasing prices due to the inflation and actually have less money in their pockets.
People abroad see this and feel afraid, thinking "what if China goes on growing like this and our society starts copying this?" This fear isn't rational by any means, but emotions are never rational.

What China needs to do to gain Soft Power, thus make people believe "China is good" rather than "China is bad", would be to introduce some way to give its people more freedom to participated in the political deciding process and introduce freedom of speech for its own press, so that Chinese newspapers are considered to be more reliable and people abroad start getting to know what is going on in China, understanding China and feeling with China.
Those Chinese who are in this forum are also important contributors to China's Soft Power - and so are all Chinese who know english and make friends with foreigners.

However, I believe that economic integration through globalization will eventually increase the amount of connections between Chinese and foreigners, integrating China also into the global culture.
Texts like the one above, however, try to create a "we are we, the others are the others"-feeling and therefore harm China's Soft Power.

Soft Power?

Everynowhere, I think China is doing just what you are saying. For example, there were China Daily
European Launch & China Daily Asia Launch already.  More investment will be made in the media as
supported by this announcement on the front page of CD,

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
