‘It’s fine to thank your mother, but at first you should thank your country.’ An official in General Administration of Sport of China said in CPPCC.

Winter Olympic Champion Zhou Yang said she could make a better life for her parents after her gaining the champion, which moved many people.

But the official said sportsmen should thank their county first. Indeed, the country pays much to cultivate sportsmen. But is it a must to orally thank the country first?

Zhou has thanked her country by being champion. It’s much better than a word.

Some comments, your mother country hug you when you are champion, but only your mother hug you if you are not.

It may be hard for foreigners to understand this.

In China, athletes are fostered by the country, while in the west, the atheletes join the related clubs.

Absolutely not hard to understand: also this is not only in China, it is an heritage of the socialist countries like USSR, Romania, East German, etc, that produced fantastic athlets in the 70s -80's...sport is at first a tool for give credit to the governments...It's even a part of the ideology that denounce the West like "depraved", showing how sanes are peoples in socialist countries...The system was truely admirated and respected in West until it was discovered that violence was common to force athlets to reach performance goals and was not less corrupted by money or drug than in west...

In China, there is hot debate about the system.  The country poured a lot of money to cultivate certain guys with good talent. What is important for the officials is to win more gold medals in international competition, rather than improving overall physicial condition of its people.

Zhou Yang's motherland has over 1.3billion children, but his mother might only have one child. If Zhou didn't thank the motherland, others would do, but if Zhou didn't thank his mother, no one would do. His mother gave birth to him and brought him up but didn't ask him to express thanks, why does the country ask him to do so ?Just because of the cultivation? Isn't  that a payback to the country when he got the gold medal?
Love your mother and motherland from heart, not from mouth.
Actions speak louder than words.

but for most of chinese common families ,they can not afford to foster an athlete and then the motherland or government come up to take over the mission. since then the government afford anything of the athlete including daily necessity and studying

In the case of China, Country First.

In the case of the USA, UK, Australia, Coach first, family second and the country can go to hell.
