I am a bit curious as to the current "man on the street" attitude towards weapons.  What does the regular Joe and ordinary Jane in China think about them?

For a citizen to own weapons is "forbidden". Remember, Mao said that "Power comes from the barrel of a gun", so the party keeps a tight rein on who has them. The citizens don't need them anyway so it's a moot point.
