Japan was morally responsible for forcing women to work in wartime brothels, a former Japanese leader said on Monday, in a veiled criticism of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's comments on sex slaves.

Former prime minister Tomiichi Murayama, who made a landmark apology for Japan's wartime actions in 1995, also said efforts by politicians to justify World War Two were making Asian neighbours worry Tokyo was returning to its militarist past.

It's a pity that Murayama's apology was only his personal stance not the government. The former Prime Minister failed to get approval from the cabinet to issue formal apology during his time.

Morally responsible is pretty much of the same category as Morally supportive.

The facts is wartime Japan set up comfort houses to take care of the needs of the troops.

Private procurers were used to recruit women.  Abuses had occured, hard not to be otherwise given the culture of the time that saw women as nothing more than chattels.  Given the dispositions of the kinds of people involved, ie pimps, racketeers.

The question still remains, are there any evidence that the Japanese military actively took part in any alleged mass kidnapping?

Official Japan begs the difference.

The former PM paid acknowledgment to this doubt too in his press interview.

The accounts by surviving victims are good enough evidence, is it not?

As always, I'd like to hear their side of the story. I believe, many people would like to know about Japan's ultra-nationalists' justifications. However, as most people in this region of Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia had in mind, it just seemed sinister.

admchengho,

Apparently not.  The Japanese are raising the issue of corroboration.

There have been none.  In trial of sex crimes, when its come down to he said/she said, corroborating evidence is always helpful.  Why didn't the 'sex slave' activists provide them in support of the women?  In some cases it is relatively easy to get them.  Go to the villages where those women come from and establish an organized systematic drafting of women by Japanese military, if it did occur.  Things on the scale alleged by the activists can't be easily disguised.

The survivors themselves were pretty ancient when they were interviewed back in the 90s. Most of the women are under/non-educated and illiterate, their recall dim after many years of disparate sufferings and harsh livings.  Their accounts were transcribed by people pushing the project.  Now is it conceivable that leading questions and "memory prompting" have not been deployed to serve a preconceived narration?

Yes its unfair on those women who got cheated out of their youth and life by the exigences of war, but Japan have the right to demand conclusive proofs after the activists earlier on got caught planting lies of mass kidnapping and violations by the military.

The Chinese should keep quit and act as a friend for now and take investments from Japan as much as possible and when China is rich then asking for apology and breaking friendship would be good time.

Japan should apologize but seems no one wants to admit anything because no one wants to look guilty.  No country wants to look bad while the world is watching which is what Chinese are doing to the Japanese but now I worry Japanese will start investing in India, Vietnam and bypass China because of political issues.
