Reply #37 Tourism is all about money

Tourists have not really had a good look at Chinese currency until they have traded in their traveler cheques that's when they remember a place called HOME and while they are touring "the Forbidden City" they learn that this was HOME to "the Last Emperor of China"(THE NO.1 tourist attraction in Beijing) thus their thoughts turn to having a cup of coffee.

Sledgehammer to crack a nut...

I'm no fan of Starbucks; moderate coffee and overly-sweet snacks at
unjustifiable prices.

However, Starbucks would not have a significant presence in so many Chinese
cities if there wasn't demand for it - much of that demand is from
Chinese consumers. Furthermore, the decision to allow Starbucks into the
Forbidden City must have been made by Chinese officials.

Therefore, the hysterical campaign against Starbucks reeks of
hypocrisy and has strong undertones of racism.

The reality here is that China's lack of confidence in its own culture and
identity compels some of its less tolerant citizens to lash out in this manner.

Yeah, currently because of the journalist’s blog which pays more attention about this matter ,the starbucks in the forbidden city attracts more and more ppl’s attention..

Some people think that firstly, the forbidden city has been one of the world culture inheritances ,besides, it stands for our country’s culture and tradition. So so many ppl follow that man and speak out loudly about this matter even denounce that starbucks should evacuate from the forbidden city right away.

To be honest, I don’t take the point absolutely. What is matter with the starbucks? At first, some department ask the starbucks to enter the forbidden city ,which can bring much more benefits ,but not because of the active actions of the starbucks. Then, during these six years, the starbucks obey all statutes and regulations .at the same time, it brings some convenience for the tourist and make ppl visiting there get a place to have a coffee and rest.

The last matters about dragon totem and dragon boat festival in South Korea ,I think, just because of people complex in the inner mind. Sometimes maybe self-contempt. China is a country with a long history and a large population with vast territory ,meanwhile ,it should contain more things ,even different or from foreign countries. A national culture should contain three, one is pure culture, the other half-bred culture and another self-identical cultural .the starbucks belongs the last one. It is not our country’s outcome, brand, our Chinese mainly drink tea from long ago. However, nowadays ,so many new things enter our country, such as coffee , cola. Maybe in the beginning we can’t accept it  but later we get accustomed to them gradually . starbucks are the like. Before this starbucks opened in the Louvre .how we should say ? A nation, a people can’t get improved if she can’t contain other exotic things. In another aspect, there are so many KODAK, cola, whether we should drive them away ? Or we should change our mind and try thinking like this : we should shut the starbucks and let those stalls mainly selling soybean milk around everywhere in the forbidden, how spectacular scenery!!! Most importantly, it will not bring the threat for some people’s complex.

Some people always are wild about these topics but actually don’t put it into the action.we ‘d better try out best to do more practical ,maybe small things.

they still can't see it

just like the Starbucks, invisible until someone pointed it out

"We know it's weakness, but the weakness is so strong!"

Spririt of the 60's....

Seneca is right when he says this tirade against Starbucks is probably less
than spontaneous.

Indeed, it is highly reminiscent of the virulent denounciations orchestrated by
the Gang of Four during the reign of Emperor Mao.

I'm sure Mrs Jiang would approve of such one-eyed hysteria.
