‘谢谢’ means ‘Thank’, Why?
The first part of 谢 is a simple form for 言 which means 'say or speak’; 身 likes like a man walking ahead that means 'body'; 寸 is an ancient length unit that is about 3.3-centimeter long. When you say thanks to Tom, you are so grateful that you may bow before him and your normal body become several inches in height!(Tom seems as high(tall) as a mountain since he has done a favour to you!)

寸 symbols ‘short’ or ‘small’

时 means ‘time’. Its 日 is ‘the Sun’ but here that shouldd represent ‘one day’. 寸 shows ‘one short period' of the 24 hours per day.
Another example is 辱(To say bad things about someone.). Its top is 辰 that was a giant dinosaur in the primary stage of the Earth.   寸 is so tiny that looks like ‘a worm’.  How can you devalue a powerful animal as a weak worm?Obviously you are calling someone names!
