On Jan 3, a 19-year-old girl went to a plastic surgery hospital in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, for a nose job. Seven hours later, her family was told she had died.

The case has really shocked the public. It is widely known that cosmetic surgery, however minor it might be, poses potential risks that might threaten a person's health even life, but the death of the girl is still something that the public cannot accept. It is really hard for people to accept that a person might die in the pursuit of beauty.

The case also exposes some problems in the plastic surgery industry. Although many plastic surgery facilities call themselves hospitals they do not have any medical licenses. They just use hospital in their names to make people think they are true hospitals.

Plastic surgery is considered a surgical operation, and only doctors with proper training should undertake the procedures in properly equipped operating theaters. However, many "doctors" in the plastic surgery "hospitals" just do the operations in normal rooms and lack any formal training.

Worse, the supervision over the plastic surgery industry is rather loose. In some previously reported cases, local health departments passed the buck to commercial management bureaus, saying the plastic surgery institutions are not hospitals, while the latter passed it back by saying they involve health risks.

According to official data, the value of China's plastic surgery industry is second only to that of the United States. But as the industry grows, supervision has failed to keep pace with it. Tougher regulation of the industry is needed to prevent people's lives being put at risk.

From the quality of the practitioners, to the certification of the institutions and the tightening of supervision so there are no loopholes, the cosmetic surgery industry must be better regulated to ensure people's safety comes first.

This is indeed a intriguing problem from a medical perspective.

Plastic surgery, as its name suggests, involves replacing human tissue with artificial cartilage which is usually inert in nature like most plastics and theoretically won't elicit immunological rejections.  In other words, the material should be of sufficient quality so that its antigenic potential is non-existant or at least negligible.

A nose job is dangerous only insofar as whether the artificial cartilage molded into the shape of the nasal bridge meets these standards.

Guizhou isn't amongst the best places to have your nose job done precisely because laws are lax when it comes to re-constructive surgery and adequate safeguards against the use of subpar material for such procedures are simply non-existent.

One of the remedial actions is to formally declare nose operations to be off limits to non-medical practitioners.

An experienced anesthesiologist is an irreplaceable human asset to accompany any such surgeries because only he can determine whether it is safe for the prospective /client to go under the knife.

Anesthesia Issues: Most patients tolerate anesthesia without difficulty; however, anesthesia-related complications are the leading cause of cosmetic surgery deaths. The risk is very slight, but it does exist, which is why even elective procedures need to be taken seriously.

She has paid the ultimate price for vanity! What a pity; but hers is not the only case; sometime ago a Chinese lady died in South Korea as a result of botched cosmetic surgery!  And there are numerous cases of botched surgeries resulting in disfigured looks, contrary to the patients' expectation of a nice look!  When will they learn?  Don't try to temper with nature, it's not worth the risk!  It's not how  girls look, but how they feel about their looks that drive many to risk their lives!
