Egyptian student aims to promote tourism, bridge cultures [Copy link] 中文

For seven years, Amir Gadalla immersed himself in Chinese environment to better promote Egyptian destinations in China, trying to be a bridge between the two cultures.

Amir first came to China from Egypt to work, and now he is studying for his PhD degree at Fudan University in Shanghai, majoring in tourism management. He said he especially wants to promote the many vacation resorts by the red sea in Egypt.

"Starting in 2015, our Chinese market is growing very fast. Now we have 180-thousand to 200-thousand Chinese travelers to Egypt every year," said Amir.
He said there are many differences between Chinese and Arab cultures, and the two peoples have much more to learn about each other. For his industry, that's an opportunity.

Egypt now has the largest number of Chinese language tour guides in the middle east, and that is just one facet of the rising cultural exchanges between China and the Arab world in all sectors.

China and Arab states agreed to establish a future-oriented strategic partnership of comprehensive cooperation and common development, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday.

Xi announced the decision in his keynote speech at the 8th ministerial meeting of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum.

Meanwhile, the inter-personal relationship between China and the Arab world is growing side by side with the diplomatic relations.

Shanghai International Studies University started a program to train Chinese-Arab interpreters in 2016, and its Middle East Studies Institution was already founded in 1992.

"With the development of Belt and Road Initiatives, we have more and more demand for advanced interpreters in multilateral and bilateral cooperations," said Sun Degang, deputy director of the institution. "Therefore we are doing a very important thing for the future cooperation between the two sides."

Amir also chose Chinese at his foreign language class to make the communication more effective. "Marketing is all about understanding the target customers: their culture and their lifestyles," he said.

Amir hopes he will continue to contribute to the Egyptian Tourism Ministry after he graduates. Experts say potentials in the cultural exchanges between China and the Arab world are huge, and it starts from individuals like Amir.(CGTN)
