My suggestion is that COSCO should vigorously develop both the ocean and river cruise business. The former has plenty of well developed models to copy from. However, the latter can be more innovative by adopting many of the amenities on ocean cruises such as on board shopping, leisure activities and facilities, and perhaps even gaming facilities (such as on-board casino clubs) etc. The river cruise ships can be made much larger by using catamaran hull designs to accommodate added facilities. I believe river tourism has great potential in China. It also has a real added advantage in that tourists have the leisure of not having to change hotels (and thus avoid all the wasted time and troubles of packing and unpacking) as in land and air tourism. I think for river cruise ships, these will be real innovations.
