I think North Korea is playing an important and pivotal roll in the development of Asia. Let me explain why.
Every time they do something weird, stupid, backwards, ridiculous, that leaves the world just shaking their heads in bewilderment and confusion, China also shakes their head, but secretly understands exactly what is actually going on in North Korea, because everything that they do is what China once was.
That's why North Korea is important, it reminds China of how far they have come in their development, and, more importantly, how much work they still need to do in their development. All the political crackdowns, repression, terrible human rights violations, North Korea is still what China was in the 1950's, 60s and 70s. It makes China realize that there is only one way forward, to continue to open up and reform, and not to sink back into old habits of political crackdowns and repression.
The world looks at North Korea and can't believe what goes on with them, China looks at North Korea and understands exactly what is going on. North Korea is a very important chess piece in this giant global game which CHina is becoming more and more a part of. It's great that China is reminded of this, they need to be reminded, because opening up and reform is the only way forward for them. And a lot of country areas of China are still no different to North Korea today.
